3rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Volunteer Fair scheduled for Sunday, January 18th

One of the greatest privileges of serving as director of the Westfield Memorial Library is seeing, every day, how deeply Westfield residents care about one another. From tutoring a neighborās child to delivering meals to a homebound senior, acts of serviceāboth large and smallāare the threads that bind us together. It is in that spirit that I am pleased to announce our 3rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Volunteer Fair.
On Sunday, January 18th at 2:00pm, the library will host a wide range of local nonprofit and community organizations, all under one roof, all eager to share how residents can get involved. Whether you have an hour a month or several hours a week, a specific skill to offer or simply a willingness to help, this fair is designed to make volunteering accessible, welcoming, and meaningful.
Public libraries have always been more than buildings filled with books. We are gathering places, learning centers, and connectors. Hosting a volunteer fair is a natural extension of that role. Libraries are among the few truly equitable, and inclusive spaces left in civic life, and that makes us an ideal place for people to explore how they can contribute to causes they care about.
At the fair, attendees will be able to meet representatives from organizations working in areas such as literacy and education, food security, environmental stewardship, arts and culture, health and wellness, and services for seniors and families. Some groups are seeking long-term volunteers, others have short-term or event-based opportunities, and many are happy to work with students, retirees, families, and first-time volunteers.
Importantly, this fair is not just for those who already know where they want to serve. It is also for people who are curious but unsure where to start. Volunteering can feel intimidating if you have never done it before, or if your schedule is unpredictable. By bringing many organizations together, we hope to make it easier to ask questions, compare opportunities, and find a good fitāwithout pressure or obligation.
The benefits of volunteering extend well beyond the organizations themselves. Research consistently shows that volunteering strengthens social connections, builds skills, and improves overall well-being. For young people, it can spark interests and shape career paths. For adults, it can provide a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. For our community as a whole, it fosters empathy, resilience, and cooperation.
I am especially proud that this event reflects the undeniable collaborative spirit that makes Westfield special. We are grateful to the many nonprofits that have already committed to participating, and to the volunteers who will help make the day run smoothly. Their enthusiasm is a reminder that while challenges may change, our communityās willingness to step up remains constant.
Admission to the Volunteer Fair is free and open to all, but registration is encouraged. Stop by for ten minutes or stay for an hour. Bring a friend, a neighbor, or a family member. You may leave with a volunteer application, a new perspective, or simply a deeper appreciation for the good work happening all around us.
I hope you will join us and discover how your time and talents can make a difference. Together, we can continue to build a community that not only reads together, but works together.
