One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus is a mystery novel that follows five high school students who end up in detention together, but when one of them suddenly dies, the other four become suspects in an ongoing investigation. Each of the students comes from a very different background and has something to hide, and as the story progresses, more details about their lives and secrets begin to unfold. The book explores how rumors, reputation, and pressure can affect people, especially in a high school setting where everyone feels like they are constantly being judged.
One of the most engaging aspects of the book is that it is told from multiple perspectives, which allows the reader to understand each character and their lives more deeply. This made the story feel more realistic and kept me interested because I was able to see how each personās perspective contributed to the overall mystery. The pacing is strong throughout most of the novel, and the suspense builds in a way that makes it hard to stop reading. However, at the beginning, some of the characters feel a bit stereotypical, and parts of the plot may seem somewhat predictable to readers who are familiar with the mystery genre. Despite this, the character development improves as the story goes on, and the themes of trust and identity add more depth to the plot.
Readers who enjoyed A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder might also enjoy this book because of its suspenseful storyline and focus on uncovering secrets. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book, especially for readers who enjoy fast-paced mysteries.
