Wildlife Safety Tips: On and Off the Trail

From the Town of Westfield Regional Health Department

  • Stay on the Defined Trail. When hiking, stick to established trails & set up your tent on durable surfaces to avoid damaging the environment.
  • Keep Dogs on a Leash and close to you.
  • Do Not Approach Wildlife or move closer to get a picture.
  • Make Noise As You Walk. It will let animals know you’re nearby so you don’t startle them.
  • If Out at Dawn or Dusk Take Extra Precautions. Be extra alert.
  • Do Not Feed Wildlife. This includes stray cats.
  • Leave No Trace. Carry all food items out with you and ensure all garbage has a tight fitting lid.
