Teens are invited to challenge themselves and broaden their horizons by reading books from the following categories:
- One book that takes place in a real country other than the United States (fiction or nonfiction) or that is translated from a foreign language
- One book from the fantasy, speculative fiction, or science fiction genre that takes place in a world created by the author
- One book that features a protagonist from an underrepresented group or provides information about a group that has been disenfranchised (fiction or nonfiction)
- One book that is a work of historical fiction
Lists of recommended books from the above categories are available on Read Squared, where you are asked to register for our challenge and track your reading. You may, however, substitute books of your own choosing that meet the criteria.
Although you are welcome to read books that meet more than one category, each book will only count once.
Print, e-books, and audiobooks all qualify.
Participants who read one book from each of the four categories that satisfy the challenge will win a free book!
Plus teens can submit a photo with their favorite book to be posted on our Instagram. You are also invited to post reviews on Read Squared.
This online reading challenge will run through May 30.
