Our elevator was installed in 1988, with an anticipated life expectancy of about 20-25 years. Through careful maintenance, this elevator has lasted more than 35 years, but the time has come to make significant improvements to our elevator service.
Beginning Monday, May 19th, we will begin the process of replacing the library’s elevator. When we’re done, we will have a new elevator to safely move people between floors. The downside is that there will be no elevator service in the library building for approximately 4 weeks while this critical work is being completed.
What should you expect?
You will still have access to essential library services and programs. The 2nd floor will remain open. If you are not able to access the second floor via stairs, you will notice the following accommodations:
What is the timeline?
The replacement of the elevator with updated safer and more modern equipment is estimated to be completed in 4 weeks. As with any major construction project, this is an ideal estimated timeline. This timeline can change at any point.
We will continuously update residents regarding any timeline changes. Please visit our website, sign up for Library Loop (our email newsletter), and follow our socials.
Thank you for your patience as we work to continue providing you with the best possible service.
Neighboring libraries
Westfield Memorial Library, including the 2nd floor, will maintain regularly scheduled hours during construction. But you also have the option of visiting libraries in nearby communities, including Cranford, Fanwood, Scotch Plains, and Clark. All of these libraries are members of STELLA, which means that you can easily use your WML library card at any of these locations.
