Introduction
Westfield Memorial Library is committed to enriching the cultural landscape of our community by providing access to diverse forms of artistic expression. The establishment of an art gallery within the library premises aims to showcase local artists, foster creativity, and promote dialogue around various art forms. This policy outlines the guidelines and procedures governing the management and utilization of the art gallery space.
Scope
This policy applies to all individuals and groups interested in exhibiting artwork at Westfield Memorial Library art gallery.
Exhibition Selection
- Selection Criteria: Artworks for exhibition will be selected based on artistic merit, relevance to the community, diversity of perspectives, and adherence to the library’s values of inclusivity and respect.
- Application Process: Artists interested in exhibiting their work must submit an application including a portfolio of their artwork, an artist statement, and a brief proposal outlining the theme or concept of their exhibition.
- Review Process: Submissions will be reviewed by a designated library staff member.
- Notification: Artists will be notified of the coordinatorās decision regarding their application. Feedback will be provided upon request. Appeal of this decision can be made to the Library Director, whose decision will be final.
Exhibition Guidelines
- Duration: Exhibitions will typically run for four weeks, with the possibility of extension upon agreement between the artist and the library.
- Installation and Deinstallation: Artists are responsible for installing and deinstalling their artwork within designated timeframes. Any damage caused during installation or removal will be the artist’s responsibility.
- Labeling: Each artwork must be labeled with the artist’s name, title of the piece, medium, and price (if applicable).
- Sales: Artwork may be available for sale, with transactions facilitated directly between the artist and interested buyers. The artist agrees to donate 5% of all sales to the Westfield Memorial Library.
- Promotion: The library will promote exhibitions through its website, social media channels, and other appropriate means. Artists are encouraged to promote their exhibitions through their own networks as well.
- Receptions: An artist reception may be available upon request. Receptions must be scheduled on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Approval is dependent on library availability and staffing.
- Limitations: Artwork may not exceed 3ā x 3ā in size or 15 lbs in weight.
Conduct and Responsibilities
- Conduct: Artists and visitors are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner while in the art gallery space.
- Liability: The library will take reasonable precautions to ensure the safety and security of exhibited artwork, but it will not be held liable for any loss, theft, or damage that may occur.
- Insurance: Artists are encouraged to insure their artwork against loss, theft, or damage during the exhibition period.
Amendment and Review
This policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure its effectiveness and relevance. Amendments may be made as necessary with the approval of library administration.
